KSC Release No. 41-94
NOTE TO EDITORS/NEWS DIRECTORS:
The launch of the GOES-I weather satellite for NASA and NOAA
aboard the AC-73 General Dynamics Atlas 1 rocket is scheduled for
next Tuesday, April 12. The launch window extends from 2:00 a.m.
to 3:22 a.m. EDT. The liftoff will be from Launch Complex 36's
Pad B on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
Several prelaunch activities for the media are scheduled the
day before launch, next Monday, April 11.
RANGE WEATHER OPERATIONS FACILITY
At 9 a.m. a bus will depart the NASA News Center for the
Range Weather Operations Facility (formerly Cape Canaveral
Forecast Facility). First, media will be briefed on the new
lightning field mill system used by launch forecasters to
determine the potential for lightning in the Cape Canaveral
vicinity. There will also be a presentation on the Applied
Meteorology Unit which transfers new meteorological technology
into regular use by weather personnel for NASA, the Air Force,
and the National Weather Service.
To follow will be a general tour of the weather facility and
the associated Applied Meteorology Unit. Media will see the
field mill system electronic display and a high resolution
numerical forecast model being tailored by the Applied
Meteorology Unit for local site-specific short term weather
forecasts. There will also be an opportunity to observe the
doppler weather radar terminal repeated from the NOAA National
Weather Service antenna in Melbourne. The launch weather officer
for AC-73/GOES-I will also be available to answer questions.
Media will be returned to the NASA News Center at 11:30 a.m.
NASA/NOAA L-1 DAY BRIEFINGS
A pair of briefings will be held in the NASA News Center
auditorium beginning on Monday at 12 noon with the prelaunch news
conference. Participating in this event will be:
Jim Womack, NASA Launch Manager, Kennedy Space Center
Pat Symons, NASA Launch Vehicle Manager, Lewis Research Center
Marty Davis, NASA Mission Director, Goddard Space Flight Center
Tom McGunigal, NOAA Geostationary Programs Manager
John Weems, Launch Weather Officer, Department of the Air Force
Following immediately will be a NOAA briefing on GOES-I
satellite applications and doppler weather radar benefits for the
nation. Participating in this event will be:
Dr. Joe Friday, Director, National Weather Service
Dr. Bob Sheets, Director, National Hurricane Center
From 2:30 - 4:30 p.m., Dr. Friday and Dr. Sheets will do
pre-scheduled remote television interviews live from Launch
Complex 36. They will be carried on Spacenet 2, transponder 12,
channel 23. The satellite is located at 69 degrees West.
(This transponder is not NASA Select). For further information
contact Frank Lapore of the National Weather Service
Public Affairs Office at 301/713-0622.
LAUNCH DAY COVERAGE
On launch day, media covering the event should assemble at
Gate 1 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station located on State Road
401 at 12:30 a.m. to convoy to Press Site 1. After separation of
the GOES-I spacecraft from the Centaur stage, media will convoy
from Press Site 1 to the E&O Building on Cape Canaveral Air Force
Station for a post launch news conference. Those not desiring to
cover the post launch news conference will be escorted back to
Gate 1. Media are not allowed to be unescorted on Cape Canaveral
Air Force Station at any time.
ACCREDITATION
Those who wish to cover the launch of GOES-I and the
associated prelaunch activities at the NASA News Center should
send a letter of request on news organization letterhead which
should include the names and social security numbers of those
desiring accreditation. Letters should be faxed to 407/867-2692
or may be addressed to:
GOES-I Launch Accreditation
NASA PA-MSB
Kennedy Space Center, FL 32899
AC-73/GOES-I mission badges may be picked up at Gate 2 on
State Road 3 on Merritt Island on April 11 between 8 a.m. and 12
noon, or at the KSC News Center from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Media
covering launch only may obtain badging at Gate 1 on Cape
Canaveral Air Force Station starting at 12:30 a.m. on April 12.
Media holding a Space Shuttle STS-59 mission badge may
request an AC-73/GOES-I badge without an additional letter of
accreditation. An AC-73/GOES-I badge is required for all media
covering the launch from Press Site 1 on launch day.
All foreign press, regardless of whether they will be
holding an STS-59 mission badge, should immediately request
accreditation through the International Affairs office at NASA
Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Contact Debbie Rahn at
202/358-1639.
REMOTE CAMERAS
On Monday, April 11 at 2 p.m. a bus will depart the KSC News
Center for Complex 36 for media photographers who wish to
establish remote cameras at the pad. There will be no access or
transportation from Gate 1.
KSC NEWS CENTER OVERNIGHT HOURS FOR LAUNCH
The NASA News Center at KSC will be open on April 12 from 12
midnight until 3 a.m. or through spacecraft separation.
NASA SELECT COVERAGE OF GOES-I
NASA Select will carry the NASA AC-73/GOES-I prelaunch news
conference and the NOAA satellite applications briefing on
Monday, April 11 starting at 12 noon.
On launch day, April 12, launch coverage will begin at 12:30
a.m. and continue through spacecraft separation which occurs at
29 minutes after liftoff. The post launch news conference will
not be carried on NASA Select.
NASA Select is available on Spacenet 2, transponder 5,
channel 9 located at 69 degrees West. Audio only of the GOES-I
